I like how this line is suggesting that we are always focused on what happened in the past, and what will happen in the future, but what about the present? The present is right now and is the only thing we truly have some control over, so we ought to contemplate what we will do with what’s given to us. It is a very interesting and eloquently-worded way of basically tying together the first chapter, which consists of background information and is not yet the actual story. To me personally, this is the best line of the book so far and one of the top one’s I’ve ever read. “And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep.” ().How do you feel about this perhaps bizarre choice in a first line? I very much enjoy the simplistic, straight-to-the-point feel that this sentence gives, because it shows that Vonnegut is going to paint us a picture of something quite terrible that happened, but then say, “Yes, this happened, and yes, it was bad, but here’s how we can learn from it.” It has a very casual tone that I feel pulls a reader in rather than turn them off from pretentious, lofty writing. What a great opening sentence to hook the reader in. This is a pretty clear example of a line that I think we can all agree reflects not only the author’s writing style, but also a bit of his personality and outlook on life, and it just so happens to be the first line of the book. ![]()
